10 'Vows' I'm Making To Myself This New Year

I’ve never been that much of a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ kind of girl. Mainly because I don’t want to put pressure on myself and then end up feeling awful because I never could keep up a gym routine. But now that I’m sitting here writing this blog post, the more this list is feeling like New Year’s Resolutions. But these ones won’t be a physical change, these are ones that are going to benefit my mind and soul. 2018 has been a weird one for me, it’s been a time of huge change and while there has been a lot of great highs, there have also been some pretty bad lows. I’ve never been the sort of person who looks forward to a new year, but for some reason I have this buzz inside me that tells me 2019 is going to be a good year, and I’m choosing to run with that optimistic mindset.

1.Never Settle for Anything Less Than What You Deserve

In work, relationships and friendships. I’ve chosen to let go of a lot of people this year who don’t make me feel how I want to feel and don’t have the ideals of someone who I want to share my time and energy with. People grow up, people change, people’s ideals change and sometimes they no longer line up with someone in your life. It’s okay to let them go. It’s your life, you’re the one who has to live it. I’ve learnt that you’re allowed to be selfish every once In a while. I sometimes have the tendency run away with my feelings, but for 2019 I’m telling myself  to slow down and never settle for someone unless you know they’re exactly what you want.

2. Practice Kindness

I know it can be all so tempting to talk negatively about people. But instead of giving in to those feelings, I’m choosing to turn the other cheek and just block the negativity out of my life. I’m going to channel that negative energy to create something positive out of it.  It’s a lot less draining to turn the other cheek and choose to ignore the negativity, that way I have more room for my imagination to flurish flourish!

3. Know That You are Going to Make Mistakes. And Know that It’s Okay.

People mess up sometimes. We can’t always be right. Making mistakes is all part of the human experience. Making mistakes is how people grow and learn. Of course, I’m not actively looking to mess up, but I want to know that it’s okay to do so and don’t be too hard on myself if I do. I can be really sensitive if I know that I’ve hurt someone intentionally, so I need to learn for forgive myself for mistakes I didn’t know I was making.

4. Don’t Let Others Tell You What You are, Or are Not

A lot of the people who are no longer in my life have been trying to tell me who I am this year. But in 2019, I’m no longer going to let it get to me. The only people who know who I am are the people who are in my life right now, and I’m the only one who knows who I’m going an who I want to be. People are constantly changing. I’m not the same person I was six months ago, so I’m not going to let a person who hasn’t seen me for six months tell me who I am.

5. Listen to Your Intuition

Gut feelings are never wrong. Even when you I want them to be. Start listening.

6. Continue to Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone

I’ve had some amazing opportunities come my way this year that have excited me, but absolutely terrified me at the same time. I’m a firm believer of if it makes you nervous, you should probably just go ahead and do it. These opportunities have been some of the best things that I’ve ever done, they are thinks that I never thought I’d be able to do. And I’m so, so proud of myself for doing them.

7. People are Going to Think What You Do is Weird. That’s Okay.

Most of the people I know in my ‘real life’ have no idea what I do because I choose not to tell them. Not because I’m ashamed of what I do, but because I like to live my life on a ‘need to know’ basis. I choose not to tell people that aren’t my close friends or family because I can’t be bothered explaining the whole thing. This industry is new and not many people understand it. And that’s fine. But remember that people are going to think it’s weird. And that’s okay, because you’ve worked hard to not be working in that office job.

8. Do NOT Settle For Normality.

I wasn’t destined to live a normal life, so I’m going to stop settling for normality.

9. Stop and Appreciate The Amazing Things That You Have Done.

There’s a great quote that says “life is so subtle sometimes that you barely notice yourself walking through the doors you once prayed would open.” And it’s stuck with me ever since. At the end of every week, I’m going to stop and look back at what the week has brought me, and take a moment to be thankful for it.

10. Continue To Use Your Influence For Good.

I’m going to continue to talk about things that matter to me. I want my voice to be louder, I want to do more. I want to help someone, even if it’s just one person. I want to educate and I want people to learn. I want to influence people in more ways than just what book to read.
