What I Dislike About Working from Home
I just don’t get out much.
Like any job, it has its advantages and disadvantages, and working from home, and yourself, is no exception. Before you say anything, I know that I’m lucky to do what I do. But I’m not going to pretend that it’s all sunshine and rainbows all the time, because nothing is. And my dream job isn’t either. I adore my job, but there are aspects of it that I’m not keen on and this is what they are. I’m not taking what I do for granted, I’m just being real with you guys.
1. It’s very easy to get lazy.
There has been times where I haven’t been productive at all, and I have no one to blame but myself. It’s very easy to say “oh, that can wait” until you end up doing everything last minute. You have to be your own motivator, and some days that’s easier to do than others.
2. You worry about money a lot more.
You don’t have the security of a steady income, which is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you could make loads of money one month, but on the other you could make a lot less one month. I find myself always worrying about money, and wondering if I need to chase up an invoice that hasn’t been paid. Stressing about money is not something that I enjoy.
3. It can get lonely.
I’m massively introverted so I really like being myself, but it can be quite a lonely experience working for yourself. All of your community is online, and you don’t have the nice feeling of having people with you in an office.
4. It’s very easy to become unfit.
This may not be an issue for some people, but over the last few months I’ve started to notice how tired and worn out my body feels if I go out for a day and start walking for more than ten minutes. I don’t have a morning commute, so I don’t even get the slight exercise of doing that. I’ve started working out in the middle of the day after my lunch and in the evenings and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my productivity and the way my body feels. You really need to look after yourself when you work from home.
5. You don’t get out much.
Okay, I guess this one is slightly on me. I choose to work from home instead of going to a coffee shop or going for a morning walk, so this is slightly my fault. But I definitely don’t leave the house as much as I could, especially on beautiful spring days. I’m working on it.
What about you, what are the things you don't like?
