Book Review– Vengeance Road
Vengeance Road - Erin Bowman
Okay, okay… I know the rule is you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but how could I not!? This is probably the most GORGEOUS book cover I have ever seen in my life! I have to admit that I did buy this book solely for the cover and didn’t read what the plot was until it arrived. Luckily, it sounded intriguing.
The story follows Kate, who disguises herself as a boy and rides the plains of the American West to avenge her father’s murder, who died at the hands of the Rose Riders. Of course, she had companions in the form of two lovable, but stubborn, brothers and an ethereal Native American. The story was very clear and simple… until it wasn’t. I really enjoyed the overall plot, and I felt like I was taking this journey with the characters. But then it got to the end. There was a ‘plot twist’ that I found rather cliché and felt the story could’ve done without. I found myself rolling my eyes and thinking “oh this was going so well!” Saying that, the story played out like a film in my head, which to me shows that the plot is a good one.
Yes, I wasn’t so keen on Bowman’s ending of the novel, but boy, does she know how to make a character’s voice real! Her old American West cowboy style of writing was so believable that I couldn’t help but immerse myself in Kate’s world. There were a few words I didn’t understand, but it didn’t bother me enough to make an issue out of it. Plus it made the character appear more real. Bowan really did make a solid set of characters that I really loved. I adored Kate’s feisty demeanour and strong willed personality and it was nice to see her softer side come out.
I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something different. I’ve never come across this style of writing before and I’m really looking forward to reading her upcoming novel ‘Retribution Rails’ set in the same universe.
